Style secrets of… Elton John
How to master new-season colour, print and pattern like the master of pop
Elton John kicked off a global tour this week, and at Tu HQ we’re honouring the ultimate pop showman by channelling some of his most exuberant looks. The most important thing we learned from poring over his style archive? Indulge in the clothes and trends that make you smile, and always dress totally, unapologetically, for yourself. Elton may not have been your go-to style inspiration before now, but feast your eyes on the spectacled angel in shiny white tailoring above and try to tell us you don’t want a little bit of what he’s having. Keep scrolling to see how.
Throw on some colour
A bright palette is a fundamental part of Elton’s most fabulous get-ups. We love colourful tailoring – but until Tu’s design team conjure up a purple trouser suit, we’ll shine the light with this tomato-red broderie top, a lemon-yellow slip dress and an irresistible emerald green bag.
Say it with stripes
Not so sure about Elton’s wide 70s lapels here, but we’re all over the statement shades and stripey jacket combo. Make like the Rocket Man and add a graphic punch to your summer wardrobe with bold bands of neutral colour from Tu’s round heel sandals, or call it the blues with a summery striped blouse and fun shorts.
Add an accessory or three
Elton isn’t just showing off his thighs in this picture – he’s flaunting the power of a statement accessory or two. The moral of the outfit: if you want to stand out from the crowd, opt for pieces with pizazz and wear them all at once. You can see the Tu edit of our favourite add-ons here. Or just check out Tu’s chic, holiday-ready trilby, tassel trim wedges and cherry-red tote and ask yourself: are you ready for love?
Print makes every outfit better
“Neutrals are boring, and minimalism is a snooze,” says the imaginary purple-paisley-wearing Elton John that lives in our heads, and he has a point. Summer is no time for understatement and a wild print, whether it’s tropical, botanical or graphic, will transform your look from dull to dazzling faster than you can say “crocodile rock”. Consider these riotously patterned (but not scary) separates: a sleeveless tie-front shirt, pink floral culottes and chevron-print skirt, all from Tu.
