The Transition Trinity: 3 key pieces to take you into autumn
When the lines of the seasons blur, even veteran fashionistas can get style block. Start wearing autumn looks now? How to manage a mash up of the two?
When the lines of the seasons blur, even veteran fashionistas can get style block. Do we squeeze the most out of the last of summer? Start wearing autumn looks now? How to manage a mash up of the two?
To help navigate the tricky transition with confidence, we present to you our Transition Trinity, three versatile pieces styled up for both August and September—the shirt dress, the longline blazer and the holy loafer.
1. A shirt dress for all seasons
Nothing says ‘staple’ quite like this easy breezy olive green belted shirt dress. It flatters all shapes, sizes and colouring and is at once smart enough for the office but sassy enough for out and about.
For August, we’ve paired it with a lightweight neutral cardigan and an easy black suede loafer, accessorised with a washed-out camouflage-scarf. The muted colour scheme at once captures the ease of summer’s final days á la Donna Karan and anticipates ever so slightly the coming chill.
For September, think Ralph Lauren and keep the layered attitude the same, but swapping the lightweight caramel cardi for a heavier gauge navy and the little loafer for a classic Chelsea boot. The rich autumnal milieu of navy, olive and brown is the quintessential colourway for jumpstarting the new season.
2. Just peachy
We love this longline boyfriend blazer á la Stella McCartney in a pretty peach. Styling this number for high summer is a no-brainer, but when autumn creeps in, counter the blazer’s breeziness with this gorgeous graphic print dress.
The peach pops nicely against the grey in a contemporary way (think: gallery go-to attire) and picks up on similar hues in the print. Finish with chunky platform boots that start to signal the end of summer.
When September comes to call, swap out the pretty prints for a tougher look, using the blazer to add a touch of 80s retro to a slick (and slimming) all-black ensemble. Opt for these rock ‘n’ roll leggings and flattering sleeveless polo neck top and finish with heavy-duty accessories: a power black bowling bag and oh-so-chic-for-fall pointy-toed booties.
3. Loafer reloaded
The 90s are back! Think Clueless’ Cher and grab a pair of this autumn’s must-have chunky loafers as piloted down the runways of Alexander Wang, Tommy Hilfiger and more.
Start off August by mixing this heavy-soled take on the traditional patent loafer with some avant-garde 90s flair, like this optical polka-dot mini-shirt dress. We’ve teamed it with a summery double zip white leather handbag.
In September, take these cool kicks back to school by going for preppy-with-a-twist. The easy androgynous look of this varsity letter sweatshirt teamed with 50s cigarette jeans passes with straight As for prep school darlings and alumna alike.
