Your guide to December
Our guide to the best festive events taking place in the UK this month
It’s officially December, which means it’s finally acceptable to unleash your inner-elf and let the festive times roll. If you’re ready to get into the holiday spirit, or just looking for a fun family day out this winter, these are our top picks of the very best events which will be taking place across the UK. Make sure you’ve got these in your Christmas calendar.
Get your brightest Christmas jumper on, as this December Buddy the ELF will be taking Santa’s sleigh to The Lowry in Manchester. Based on the beloved cinema hit starring Will Ferrell, ELF is the hilarious tale of a young orphan child who crawls into Santa’s bag and is transported to the North Pole. A fun evening out for all of the family, both the big kids and little ones will love this.
Prepare for an evening of indulgent festivities, filled with fine spirits, exquisite cocktails and delicious food at the East London Liquor Company. Set in the bar with full view of the stills, you can discover the art of distillation and the history of spirits while sampling a fantastic Christmas-themed feast. You’ll be treated to a six-course tasting menu, with a different cocktail to go with each, and the chance to sample each of their spirits. Maybe wear your stretchy jeans for this one.
This December, Skate at Somerset House with Fortnum and Mason will see Somerset Houses’ neoclassical yard transformed into the ultimate snowscape. There’ll be a range of activities both on and off the ice, from Skate Lates, to The Fortnum’s Christmas arcades for those who’d rather keep their pumps on and do a little shopping instead. And après-ski, why not cosy up with a hot drink at the luxe Fortnum’s Lodge?
To really experience the magic of Christmas, get your scarf on and head to the Southbank Centre for their annual Wintertime Festival. Traditional alpine chalets will line Queen’s Walk, offering up delicious street food and artisan gifts as always – but the thing were most excited about? The Finnish rooftop sauna. Set in a picturesque roof garden on top of Queen Elizabeth Hall, you can escape the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and instead unwind while soaking up the striking views overlooking the Thames. Bliss.
Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market is a firm fixture in the city’s holiday countdown, making the town come alive with the spirit of the Christmas each December. Enjoy a traditional pretzel, washed down with a cup of weissbeer while watching some live music on Victoria Square – and whilst you’re there, why not pick up some presents too? With everything from handcrafted wooden decorations and glass baubles to toys, jewellery and more, there’s something for everyone’s stocking.
Step into Christmas at Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland. Set in the picturesque Old Market Square overlooked by the grand Council House, there’ll be traditional Christmas market stalls and a skate rink with a 60ft tree (we’ d go just for a selfie in front of this). Once you’ve finished practicing your moves on the ice, keep your cool in the Ice Bar or take a slide down the Helter Skelter for a cup of mulled wine.
