Your guide to September
A round-up of the top events taking place around the UK this month
The summer holidays are over, the air is feeling crisper and the arrival of autumn is imminent. To get you geared up for the new season, there are loads of great things going on this September up and down the country. In fact, you’ll be so busy that you won’t even notice when summer ducks out, promise. Scroll your way through our top picks.
For a serving of music, culture and magical forest gatherings, why not plan a trip to Festival No. 6? Portmeirion’s Italian-style village transforms into the mainstage of this fantastical festival on the coast of North Wales this month. Surrounded by a sprawling estuary and hidden by woodland, this colourful little spot makes the ideal family getaway with plenty of waterfront activities to keep little (and big) ones entertained.
Surround yourself with those irresistible, scrunchy faces at the Pug Café pop-up at The Book Club, Shoreditch. You can count on plenty of cuddles from curly-tailed friends while you relax with a coffee. Both pug owners and pug lovers can enjoy the event but booking is essential. Who’d want to miss out on this? We’re getting our tickets right now.
This 10-day festival is not just for the Mr Darcy devotees of the world. Austen lovers and history buffs alike have the unique opportunity to travel back in time and celebrate all things Regency. Dress in costume and parade around the city of Bath as Ms Austen herself would’ve done, then head off to the masked ball and dance the night away. But if that’s not your cup of tea, you can also explore the spookier side of the city on the Bath ghost walk. Creepy.
Delve deep into the capital’s creative heritage by exploring hundreds of installations and events around the city. Every year since 2003, artists, architects and designers from across the globe have been invited to showcase their work spanning all disciplines from furniture to font design and everything in between. In need of some serious inspo? Be sure to check out Reflection Room by Flynn Talbot.
Let’s go fly a kite… literally. Head down to the classic seaside resort – Lytham St Annes – and watch as the skies fill with colourful kites in all shapes and sizes. Or bring your own and see if your skills match up to the experts, including the Al-Farsi Kite Team, all the way from Kuwait. But if you haven’t got a kite of your own, just pack up a picnic and bring along a very brave teddy bear to take part in the teddy parachute drop. Teddy not up to the dive? Sit back and watch as hundreds of other courageous bears float down to the seafront. It’s a sight to see.
If nothing gets you more excited than the return of autumn, the Malvern Autumn Show is a must-visit. From the RHS autumn flower show to the giant vegetable championship and the vintage village to storytelling at the Treehouse Garden, there’s something for everyone at this weekend event dedicated to the changing seasons.
